Successful House Training

Even very young puppies benefit from structure and consistency.  The first weeks that your puppy spends in his new home are a very formative time in his life.  He is learning to depend on and trust in you.  Puppies thrive in a stable and predictable environment.  It is your job to create this type of atmosphere for him.

Best Advice for House Training

This dog training advice has never disappointed me.  Follow it exactly and you will see your puppy catch on very quickly.  Another benefit of this is fewer messes to clean up.

First of all you will need to purchase an appropriately sized pet crate.  A crate is the key to this dog training advice.  Crates are not inhumane as long as they are used responsibly.  As a general rule, dogs of all ages dislike eliminating waste in confined areas.  A crate gives your puppy incentive to wait to do their business.  The crate dog training advice is a very simple process to follow.  It takes a big commitment of time on your part, but the results are amazing!

A puppy will need to “go” approximately 10-15 minutes after he has eaten or drank anything.  Watch the clock, and take him out to a designated potty area at the appropriate time.  Walk him back and forth until he uses the bathroom.  Praise him profusely when he goes.  If he doesn’t go after about five minutes, bring him back into the house and put him in his crate.  Get him back out in about fifteen minutes and take him straight to the potty area.  Repeat this process until he has successfully eliminated outside.

Some good advice is to choose a cue word to communicate to your dog that you want him to use the bathroom.  Some people say, “do your business,” but you can use anything that you like.  Repeat the word while you’re waiting for him to go and say it enthusiastically once he has gone.

Allow your pup some supervised free time in the house once they have been successful outside.  Play with them and give them lots of attention for about thirty minutes.  After playtime, put your puppy back into the crate for about an hour.  Take your puppy out of his crate at the end of that time and bring him straight to the outdoor potty area.  Walk him around while speaking his potty cue word.  Give him about five minutes to get the job done.  Just like before, if he is successful, give him lots of praise and take him in for play time.  If he’s not ready to go yet, put him back in his crate for another fifteen minutes before trying again.

Repeat this dog training all throughout the day.  You will have few accidents to clean up and you will have a puppy that begins to realize very quickly what kind of behavior you value.
